The past several days have proven to be unbelievable for just about everyone I encounter. Who could imagine the deluge of rain we would have or the outrageous flooding that would result? Local weather personalities and on-the -spot reporters worked relentlessly to keep everyone informed and safe. One of the questions that seems to be on everyone's mind has to do with flood insurance--who has it, who doesn't, who qualifies, what happens if you don't have it?
Reflecting on these recent events, I am reminded of how, so often, our emotions mirror nature. We may be hit with a deluge of feelings, overwhelming feelings of sadness, joy, fear, anger, or relief. The specific emotion may have been predictable, but its intensity not so. Before we realize it, tears well up in our eyes, threatening to spill over the landscape of our once peaceful features. Where is the flood insurance? Who or what can protect us from our pain, our sorrow, our fear? Who is capable of understanding hurt or joy that surpasses our own understanding? Who will be there to help us 'clean up'?
For me, there is no protection from the emotions. There is only hope and peace of mind that God is in control. We will not be spared from feeling what we feel, but the flooding will subside, not long after cresting. Things will return to normal in due time. Emotions will level out and we will resume control of our facescapes. The Prince of Peace will repair and restore.
With God's love, we find ourselves stronger for passing through life's storms.
